FibroScan Liver Test

A Fast, Painless Scan That Measures Your Liver Health, No Biopsy Needed

What Is a FibroScan?

A FibroScan is a quick, painless scan that measures the health of your liver in just a few minutes. Using a technology called transient elastography, it gently measures how stiff your liver is, which tells your doctor how much scarring (fibrosis) and fat (steatosis) may be present, all without a needle or biopsy.

FibroScan is done right in our office and takes only about 10 minutes. It is completely non-invasive, so there is no recovery time and you can return to your day immediately. For many patients, it replaces the need for a liver biopsy and makes it easy to monitor liver health over time.

Why a FibroScan Matters

Liver damage often develops silently, with no symptoms until it is advanced. A FibroScan helps catch problems early by measuring liver scarring and fat before they become serious. It is especially valuable for people with fatty liver disease, hepatitis, or other liver conditions, letting your doctor track changes over time and adjust your care. Early detection gives you the best chance to protect, and even reverse, liver damage.

Who Should Get a FibroScan ?

A FibroScan may be recommended if you have, or are at risk for, a liver condition. Your doctor may suggest one if any of these apply to you:

You may benefit from a FibroScan if:

  • You have fatty liver disease (NAFLD or NASH)
  • You have hepatitis B or hepatitis C
  • You have elevated liver enzymes on blood tests
  • You have diabetes, obesity, or high cholesterol
  • You drink alcohol regularly or have a history of heavy use
  • You need ongoing monitoring of a known liver condition

If any of these apply to you, a FibroScan is a simple, painless way to check your liver health. Ask our team whether it is right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a FibroScan?

A FibroScan is a quick, non-invasive scan that measures liver stiffness to check for scarring and fat in the liver. It takes about 10 minutes and requires no needles or biopsy.

Does a FibroScan hurt?

No. A FibroScan is completely painless. A small probe rests on the skin over your liver and sends gentle pulses, similar to an ultrasound. Most people feel only a light tapping sensation.

How do I prepare for a FibroScan?

In most cases you will be asked not to eat or drink for about three hours before the scan. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the right side of your abdomen. Our team will give you exact instructions.

How long does a FibroScan take?

The scan itself takes only about 10 minutes, and there is no recovery time. You can return to your normal activities right away.

What do my FibroScan results mean?

Your results show how much stiffness (scarring) and fat are in your liver. Your doctor will explain your scores and what they mean for your liver health and next steps.

Is a FibroScan better than a liver biopsy?

For many patients, a FibroScan provides the information a biopsy would, without needles, pain, or recovery time. In some cases a biopsy is still needed, and your doctor will advise you.
