Capsule endoscopy uses a tiny, disposable camera about the size of a large vitamin that you simply swallow. As the capsule travels naturally through your digestive tract, it takes thousands of pictures, especially of the small intestine, an area that is difficult to reach with a standard endoscopy or colonoscopy.
The images are sent to a small recorder you wear on a belt. There are no needles and no sedation, and you can go about most of your day while the capsule does its work. Your doctor later reviews the images to look for the source of bleeding, inflammation, or other problems in the small intestine.
